Determining the location of Gamma-Ray Bursts through the evolution of their soft X-ray absorption

چکیده
We investigate through dedicated numerical simulations the evolution of the soft Xray absorption properties of a cloud surrounding a gamma-ray burst source. We show that the absorption properties of the material are strongly modified by the ionization induced by the intense burst flux. We derive the temporal evolution of the measured column density as a function of the density and size of the absorbing medium. Even if their statistical significance is not extremely compelling, we find that the detection in several bursts of variable absorption during the gamma-ray phase can be accounted for if these bursts are associated to overdense regions in molecular clouds with properties similar to those of star formation globules. We fit our model variable column density to the data of GRB 980329 and GRB 780506, showing that with this method the size, density and density distribution of the material surrounding a burst can be measured.

Optimum driving a Z-pinch for soft X-Ray lasers
A capillary plasma z-pinch as an alternative active medium of soft X-Ray lasers was studied experimentally and theoretically. The theoretical analysis was based on the self consistent solution of the so called “snow plow” model. The dynamics of pinched plasma is determined by the capillary parameters and by the time dependence of electrical current passing through it. The current time dependenc...
متن کاملX-ray Hardness Evolution in GRB Afterglows and Flares: Late Time GRB Activity Without NH Variations
We show that the X-ray and γ-ray spectra of Swift GRBs and their afterglows are consistent with the emission characteristic of an expanding, relativistic fireball. The classical afterglow due to the impact of the fireball on the external medium is often not observed until one to several hours after the GRB. Focusing on GRBs 061121, 060614, and 060124, but generalizing to the full (>50 Msec XRT ...

In this paper, the production mechanisms and the spectral-angular distribution of X-ray Cherenkov radiation (XCR) was investigated in detail and some unique properties of XCR and its applications were discussed. It is shown that, in the vicinity of the atomic absorption edges, the real and the imaginary parts of the refractive index are varied drastically and for some materials the refractive i...
متن کاملExtinction of gamma-ray burst afterglows as a diagnostic of the location of cosmic star formation
The properties of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are used to investigate the location of star formation activity through the history of the Universe. This approach is motivated by the following: (i) GRBs are thought to be associated with the deaths of massive stars and so the GRB rate ought to follow the formation rate of massive stars, (ii) GRBs are the last phase of the evolutio...
متن کاملOn study of X-ray absorption and properties of dispersion of W, MoS2 and B4C particles in high density polyethylene
Shielding radiation from both x-rays and gamma-rays is important for personnel in medical fields e.g. interventional radiology, nuclear power stations, and other inspection facilities where radiation is involved. Lead is known for its effective shielding property against these high energy radiations, however heaviness and toxicity are its main drawback. In this study effectiveness of non-lead p...
